The faux-Swedish Saab 9-7X SUV may be heading toward the end of the trail.

The Saab 9-7X was the carmaker’s first-ever SUV. Under parent company General Motors, the 9-7X is on the receiving end of what the auto industry calls “badge engineering.” That is, selling a single model under different brands, where the only real difference is the badge.

The 9-7X carries Saab-specific styling cues; for instance, the ignition is in the center console behind the gear lever, an echo of Saab tradition which places the ignition on the floor between the front seats. However, the 9-7X is actually built in Ohio. It is yet another version of the truck that’s otherwise known as the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Buick Rainier, GMC Envoy, and Isuzu Ascender. The concept has never caught on, either with Saab loyalists or the general public.

As with its corporate siblings, the Saab 9-7X comes powered in its base form by a 4.2-liter six-cylinder engine that registers a strong 290 hp. The top model includes a 300-hp V8 that generates 330 pound-feet of torque and provides quicker launches. It also adds 1,000 pounds of towing capacity, giving it a substantial 6,500-pound rating. This engine includes GM’s Active Fuel Management technology, which shuts down half the engine’s cylinders when not needed, such as at low speeds and highway cruising, to maximize its efficiency. As a result, the V8 gets similar fuel economy to the V6 engine.

    Saab 9-7X Vehicle Summary

Much of the competition now includes modern, five-speed automatic transmissions, but the Saab makes do with only a four-speed gearbox. A fully automatic all-wheel-drive system, limited-slip rear differential and rear-wheel electronic traction assist are included for maximum foul-weather traction. StabiliTrak stability control is also installed to help the vehicle hold the pavement during extreme handling situations. Because it lacks low-range gearing, the 9-7X’s off-road prowess is limited to dirt roads and gravel inclines. A relatively low ride height does afford a lower step-in height, however.

A fully independent suspension with electronically controlled air shocks in the rear along with 18-inch wheels and tires help maintain a smooth ride with decent handling. However, the Saab 9-7X still doesn’t feel as nimble around the corners as many of today’s car-based crossover SUVs.

Inside, the 9-7X is the most luxurious model in GM’s midsize SUV fleet. It also has rollover-sensing, side-curtain airbags. If you’re a techie, look elsewhere, however, as it doesn’t offer much in the way of the latest gadgets.

Is the Saab 9-7X for You?
    Buy the 9-7X if
You want the most luxurious version of GM’s midsize SUV and have no need for off-road capabilities; you're a Saab fanatic in search of an SUV.

    Keep Looking if
You want to venture off-road; you prefer a car-based crossover SUV that affords more car-like maneuverability; you think that slapping a Saab badge on a GM truck is a bad idea.

    Who Fits?
Four adults fit nicely in the vehicle’s roomy interior and a fifth can squeeze in the back for short trips; shorter riders will appreciate its lower ride height.
